Aims
The aim of this project is to study the Shags that breed on or originate from Lundy Island. All birds are marked at their nest sites with uniquely coded metal and colour-rings to facilitate identification in the field and studies on behavior and movement. Specific objectives of this project are to study juvenile recruitment and post-juvenile dispersal, identify non-breeding range and investigate breeding site suitability and site fidelity of the Shags on Lundy. Lundy birds are ringed with a red colour ring with white lettering LAxx or LBxx, where xx are letters.

Bird ringing in Britain is licensed and coordinated by The British Trust for Ornithology. More information on why we ring birds and why we use colour marks on our study species can be found here. Bird ringing in Europe is coordinated by EURING.
The definitive database of all colour-marking schemes for Shags in Europe is available on the Cormorant Research Group website.
A online form for reporting sightings of Lundy-ringed Shags will be provided on this website in the future.
